Minimum requirements
Academic Background All candidates for admission to the Graduate Diploma in Teaching must have qualified for the award of a degree. An applicant for the secondary programme must have papers to at least 300 level in a teaching subject appropriate to the secondary school curriculum. The Education Council also requires all teacher education providers to pre-assess literacy and numeracy skills of all applicants. Competency in English Language A person s ability to teach is limited by their ability to communicate with their students. Mastery of spoken and written English is imperative for any person working in New Zealand schools. An extra requirement applies to applicants for whom English is not their first language. Applicants who fall into this category must provide evidence that they have completed the academic version of the IELTS test within one year prior to applying for the programme, and that they achieved at least 7.0 in all components of the test. This is a minimum standard before an application can be considered. Applicants born in New Zealand are exempt from this requirement, and some other exemptions also apply. Suitability for teaching An applicant must also be: A person of good character Physically and mentally fit to carry out a teaching role safely and competently Suited by personality to teaching.
