About the course
What can I expect out of this qualification?
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the New Zealand building industry with competent workers who are able to work as a building surveyor or other professions in related areas such as building inspectors or compliance officers.
The public sector and building industries will benefit by having people with the capabilities and competencies to make informed decisions and to perform the functions, roles and responsibilities of a building surveyor, building inspector or compliance officer.
Graduates will be able to operate independently and capable of making informed decisions around compliance in the building regulatory environment.
Graduates will not be able to practice as a building surveyor, building inspector, or building consent official until they have acquired practical experience to meet employer requirements.

Minimum requirements
GENERAL ADMISSION Academic Requirements NCEA Level 2 (or equivalent) English Language Requirements Where English is not the Applicant's first language, evidence showing sufficient competence in English to complete this programme successfully is required. International students must demonstrate English proficiency as set out in the NZQA table for Internationally Recognized English Proficiency Outcomes for International Students for study at Level 4. This could be an IELTS score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5, or an equivalent internationally recognised test. https://www.nzqa.govt.nz/about-us/our-role/legislation/nzqarules/ nzqf-related-rules/the-table/ Work Experience Requirements Applicants for general admission are not currently working in the building and construction industry and may be interviewed to assess their suitability for the role and motivation to study the programme. This includes the ability to complete a minimum of 446 hours of work experience in a Building Control Authority (or similar) in New Zealand. In-Employment Admission Admission for applicants who are in employment must: 1 be currently working in a technical role in the building regulatory environment (or similar) for 1 year. 2 provide a workplace agreement from their employer to support their enrolment. Only students on a work visa with a variation of conditions indicating permission to undertake a programme of study can be accepted as international students into the in-employment study option
