What can I expect out of this qualification?
The purpose of this qualification is to provide Aotearoa New Zealand with proficient early childhood educators who can provide and/or support the practice-based education and care of mokopuna - infants, toddlers, and young children in a range of early childhood contexts.
This qualification is intended for people who intend to work as early childhood educators or proceed to further study. This qualification does not lead to teacher registration.
Graduates may work independently or as part of a team in a range of early childhood contexts including those underpinned by specific philosophies, and to proceed to further study. It is also intended to enhance community outcomes.

Entry Requirements
Minimum requirements
General entry requirements Applicants must meet the specified entry requirements: Students must be at least 18 years old, have an acceptable safety check* prior to the beginning of practical experience, and have achieved the New Zealand Certificate in Early Education and Care (Level 4), or NCEA (Level 3), or equivalent. Additional requirements for international students: In addition, students for whom English is not their first language must have an IELTS Level 6.0 (Academic) with no sub-score less than 5.5, or equivalent. If students intend to progress to degree level study, it is highly recommended that they find out the specific IELTS requirements of their preferred degree programme. Distance learners: Students who enrol in the distance (online) programme will also need: - to be employed in a relevant support role within the ECE sector (either paid or voluntary) - access to a computer with prescribed basic hardware requirements as per marketing material, a microphone, and a reliable internet connection. * the safety check is in accordance with the Vulnerable Children's Act. It involves verification of identity, an interview, information of work history, referee information, a New Zealand Police vet, and a risk assessment. For Distance Learners, their workplace will attest that the safety check has been completed and is current.
