About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the maritime industry with people who have the skills and knowledge required by relevant international conventions to manage coastal or off-shore vessel operations as skipper on a fishing vessel (over 45 metres) or master on a commercial vessel up to 500 GT.

Graduates will meet the requirements of International Convention on Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping for Fishing Vessel Personnel (STCW-F) and Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).

The qualification is for experienced seafarers intending to progress to command roles on fishing or commercial vessels.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

There are no minimum academic requirements. If English is not the applicant's first language they must provide evidence of an IELTS overall academic score of at least 5.5 with no band score lower than 5.0, issued within the last two years OR equivalent. Applicants must hold thefollowing MNZ Licences (or equivalent) : applicants for Maritime Operations - Skipper Coastal Offshore must hold an SRL or equivalent, applicants for Maritime Operations - Skipper Fishing Vessel Limited/ Master 500t Near Coastal must hold either Mate FV Limited or Watchkeeper Deck 500t Near Coastal. Applicants should be aware that there are MNZ sea time, medical and eyesight requirements for the MNZ licence which this Programme contributes towards. Applicants should refer to www.maritimenz.govt.nz website. Applicants must provide a Seafarers Medical Certificate or equivalent not more than two years old to the Programme Administrator prior to commencing any one of the following courses: FAC303 STCW Elementary First Aid or FFT511 STCW Advanced Fire Fighting.
