What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the youth work sector with youth leaders who have the operational and theoretical knowledge, skills, and attitudes to work in entry level roles with taiohi.

The qualification is for new or potential entrants into the youth work sector, and those currently working with youth who would benefit from recognition of their knowledge and skills in the workplace.

Graduates will operate under general managerial supervision as part of a team working with taiohi.

Graduates will support the social and cultural aspirations of Māori and Pacific people(s) and demonstrate their commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi through their interactions with taiohi and their communities and their work.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

Open to learners aged 16 years and above. Must complete the selection interview process to ensure they are able to meet the requirements of the programme and be eligible to meet the criteria of the funding. Any criminal convictions must be disclosed during the interview and prior to beginning enrolment on the programme. Must pass a safety check consistent with the requirements of the Vulnerable Children Act 2014. Enrolment will be provisional until police vetting applications have been confirmed and students are approved to be placed in a youth work setting in order to meet the requirements of the programme. Must show ability to study at Level 3 with adequate literacy skills by either providing evidence of successful study at Level 2, or equivalent knowledge and skills to enable study at Level 3 or achieving the minimum standard of Step 3 or above in Literacy on the LNAAT. Learners enrolling on the flexible programme are expected to keep in contact through different communication modes, and it is anticipated that they would be able to self manage their own learning during the time that they are not in class or in the workplace. Must be able to commit to attending a placement in a youth work setting to complete the practical requirements of the programme for a minimum of 180 hours.
