About the course
What can I expect out of this qualification?
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the electrical industry with people who have introductory knowledge that underpins safe electrical installation, testing, commissioning, and servicing of electrical installations and equipment.
The qualification provides pre-entry foundation knowledge of electrical engineering and is suitable for those who wish to enter the industry and who do not yet have an electrical apprenticeship agreement.
Graduates of this qualification are not electricians but will have an operational and theoretical knowledge of electricity production, distribution, and utilisation, and can carry out a limited range of prescribed electrical work safely and ethically under general supervision in accordance with the Electricity Act 1992.

Minimum requirements
Candidates must have achieved: * National Certificate in Educational Achievement (Level 2) in Mathematics, English, and Physics or General Science, or * A qualification at Level 2 or above, with evidence of Mathematics, English, and Physics or General Science abilities at Level 2, Or be able to provide evidence of relevant knowledge and experience, including Mathematics, English, and Physics or General Science abilities at Level 2. Candidates are required to participate in an enrolment information session with the purpose of communicating information regarding the requirements of the programme. In addition, these sessions will be used to verify evidence and administer an aptitude test to determine candidates' level of Mathematics, English, and Physics or General Science abilities for those students who do not have NCEA Level 2. Special entry: The Dean may apply discretion to these regulations in exceptional circumstances. English Language Entry criteria Applicants for whom English is not their first language must have an acceptable level of English language fluency prior to enrolment in the programme. This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways, including successful study of a programme in which English was the language of instruction, completion of a New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 3 with an endorsement of either General, Workplace, or Academic), approved scores on IELTS tests (General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5.0) or completion of accepted international equivalents.
