Entry requirements
All outcomes in this qualification require aspects of workplace health and safety which should be considered as part of the assessment process.
The behaviours that contribute to compliance with workplace procedures, and general observation, reporting, and/or recording are inherent in the performance of the qualification's outcomes and must be considered as part of the assessment process.
Jockeys are required to work according to the New Zealand Rules of Racing of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Inc.
In order to obtain a raceday licence, jockeys must meet the requirements of the New Zealand Rules of Racing. Graduates may be able to apply for a jockey's licence on completion of the qualification.
Harness Driver/Trainers and Harness Racing Drivers are required to work according to the New Zealand Rules of Harness Racing of the Harness Racing New Zealand Inc.

What can I expect out of this qualification?
The purpose of this qualification is to provide the equine racing industry with individuals who have the skills and knowledge to either ride thoroughbred racehorses or drive standardbred horses.
The qualification is stranded to reflect the specialist skills required to ride in the thoroughbred racing industry, drive/train standardbred horses in the harness racing industry, and drive standardbred horses at raceday in the harness racing industry.
This qualification is targeted at people who have previous experience handling horses in the equine industry and who wish to further develop their skills either as jockeys, harness driver/trainers, or harness racing drivers.
Graduates will benefit by having a qualification that provides recognition of their skills and a pathway to further qualifications in the thoroughbred or harness racing industries.
The industry will benefit from this qualification by having qualified jockeys, harness drivers/trainers, or harness racing drivers who are able to contribute effectively and professionally in the racing sector.
Graduates will be capable of working under broad guidance.
