About the course

What can I expect out of this qualification?

The purpose of this qualification is to provide the solid wood manufacturing industry with people who have the skills and knowledge required to work as an operator under general supervision in a solid wood manufacturing operation. Each strand represents a process undertaken in solid wood manufacturing.

Graduates will be able to operate plant and equipment used in solid wood manufacturing safely and efficiently in one of these processes.

Graduates of the Finger Jointing strand will also be able to set up, operate, maintain and monitor machinery and application systems in a finger jointing operation.

Graduates of the Pole, Post and Pile strand will also be able to operate machinery and carry out quality checks. specific to pole, post and pile manufacturing.

Graduates of the Saw Doctoring strand will also be able to maintain and repair saws in a saw doctoring environment.

Graduates of the Sawmilling strand will also be able to operate, monitor and control sawmill equipment to produce finished products in a sawmilling operation.

Graduates of Timber Drying strand will also be able to process wood in a kiln, control temperature and ventilation in a timber drying operation.

Graduates of the Timber Grading and Optimising strand will also be able to grade timber to determine dimension and other qualities and will operate machinery in a timber grading and optimising operation.

Graduates of the Timber Machining strand will also be able to set up and operate specialised machinery to transform wood products into finished products in a timber machining operation.

Graduates of the Timber Treatment strand will also be able to operate the plant to treat timber in a timber treatment operation.

Entry Requirements

Minimum requirements

Entry to the programme, including English language and academic requirements, will be in accordance the criteria specified in the Toi Ohomai Regulatory Framework, and QMS policies and processes. In addition applicants must be: 16 years old at the time the programme commences; and able to read, write, and communicate in English at a basic level; and physically able to complete the programme specific outcomes.
