Create a video CV to show employers your unique personality and get your job application noticed.

What a video CV is

A video CV is a short video all about you. It doesn’t replace your written CV but it shows employers your personality and creativity. It can also help you stand out among other job applicants.

Video CVs are usually 1 to 3 minutes long. There are different formats you can use to tell employers about what you’ll bring to a job.

Your video CV could be:

  • a mock interview where you answer questions an employer might ask
  • a portfolio display or presentation of your work projects
  • the story of who you are and your achievements.

When to use a video CV

Video CVs can be useful when applying for creative and customer-facing jobs in areas like:

  • sales and marketing
  • design and publishing
  • customer service and hospitality
  • media and communications.

A video CV is good to use for any job application where you want to show off your presentation and speaking skills.

Think about whether making a video CV is a good idea for the job and company you’re interested in. If not, using a written CV may be best.

If you’re not comfortable in front of a camera or don’t have the technical skills to make a video, just keep working on your written CV.

How to make a video CV

Before you start filming, gather together some ideas for your video CV.

Like any good story it should have a beginning, middle and end.

Once you decide on the basic structure, write down what you want to say.

What to include

Introduce yourself first, and explain why you’ve made the video CV. Then tell the employer why you’re the right person for the job.

Next, tell them more about yourself, present your portfolio or work projects, and answer any questions you expect them to have. You could also talk about your unique qualities and relevant skills and experience.

Finish by thanking the employer for watching your video CV, then give them your contact information.

How to film a video CV

Before you film, practise what you’re going to say. If you can, do this in front of friends or whānau to get their feedback.

It’s a good idea to dress professionally like you would for an in-person interview. But try to match what you wear to the work environment of the company, whether it’s casual or more formal.

Filming tips:

  • use a tidy background in a quiet and well-lit place
  • speak slowly and clearly
  • be aware of your body language and keep eye contact with the camera.

You can film the video with your phone or a digital camera. Make sure you keep your device steady by propping it up or using a tripod.

Use editing software like iMovie or Adobe Premiere to put the finishing touches on your video.

Share your video CV

When your video CV is ready, this is how you can share it with the employer:

  • email it to the employer
  • upload it to YouTube
  • share it on a networking website like LinkedIn
  • copy it to a USB stick and mail it or deliver it in person.
